Bank on it.

Banks are out of control. I thought my cell phone company was bad with hidden charges in every nook and cranny, but my bank has them beat. My (current, soon to be former) bank has instituted a charge for using an ATM, should you try and get more money out than you have in your account. Let’s consider the logic behind this one. Say, it’s the end of the month, and your spousal unit paid the bills, leaving less in the account than you expected. You are a little short of cash and stop by your friendly neighborhood ATM to get some walking around money, for those little luxuries like gasoline and food. You pop in your card and are instructed that by pressing “YES” you are giving the owner of the ATM permission to ding your account for a couple of bucks for the priviledge of using their machine. Not fun, but you’re used to it. You then click on “withdrawl” and choose $100. Not so fast, bucko. Your significant other left just $95 in the account. Payday is in two days. Now what do you think happens? In a fair and equitable world, you’d see the screen tell you, “whoops…you’ve asked for more than you’ve got…would you like to get a ballance so you can take what you need without getting an overdraft?” But no. With B of A, what you get is a SERVICE CHARGE FOR ATTEMPTING TO TAKE OUT MORE THAN YOU HAVE ON HAND.

Pause with me for a nanosecond.

A Modest Proposal on Driving.

You can't drive 55.I’ve been thinking a lot about bad drivers. The holidays seem to bring out the worst in people. They’re in a hurry. They’re rude. They take the laws of self-preservation less than seriously, then get mad if you so much as touch your horn in protest.

I think I have a solution.

No, it’s not traffic cams. It’s not more police on traffic duty (although, that wouldn’t hurt). It’s not stiffer fines for reckless driving.

It’s a phone number. [Read more…] about A Modest Proposal on Driving.

Blowback.

As 2005 draws to a close, I thought it might be useful to try and put the past few years into perspective. Over the past year, I’ve grown increasingly aware – and concerned – over the demonization of the right by the left. Note that I’m not citing polarization, or a quid pro quo between the sides. I don’t believe that’s true. Let me tell you why…

When Clinton was in office, those of us on the right were in a constant state of angst. We couldn’t understand how those in the middle of the political spectrum (and even those on the left) could be so blind to the many ethical/moral/legal failings of Wild Bill and his cronies. Then Bush came into power. [Read more…] about Blowback.

Your Right to Stop Annoying Me.

Tired.Do you have a favorite magazine? TV show? Online site? Forget, for a moment, political speech media – news shows, political blogs, partisan sites, and such. Let’s just talk about “Mainstream Media (MSM)” I’m talking about special-interest magazines, network television, Top-40 radio, et cetera. Have you noticed lately that they seem to be getting more and more politically opinionated? I have. Everything from Law & Order to Wired magazine seems to have veered from “entertainment” to “screed” in an alarmingly short period of time. And another thing – I’ve noticed that the vast majority of these media outlets espouse a doctrine that is far to the left of the political spectrum.

The other night I watched an episode of Law & Order. It featured a right-wing, conservative radio talk show host/author getting gunned down outside a Manhattan bookstore in the first five minutes of the show. Did I mention the victim was being sued by an employee for sexual harassment? (I wonder if Bill O’Reilly would call this “hate speech.”) [Read more…] about Your Right to Stop Annoying Me.

Civil Rights versus Civil Wrongs.

[The following post is closed-captioned for the thinking-impaired.]

Okay, here’s the deal. This week, the New York Times [all the Liberal-slanted Spin (un)fit for Print] revealed [leaked] details that President Bush had authorized the NSA to “spy on Americans” as a part of our Worldwide War On Terror [WWIII]. The NYT is [predictably, in a liberal, knee-jerk fashion] outraged. The leaders of the Democrats [fellow travlers] have lined up [rushed to judgement] to pronouce Bush’s actions as “illegal.” Senator Harry Reid [had the audacity to] state that, even though he’d be briefed on this action from the very begining, he believes [sees an opportunity for scoring political points] that this program is illegal.

Can a call for the impeachment of the President be far away?[I can hear the Libs salivating, even as I write.] [Read more…] about Civil Rights versus Civil Wrongs.

Tax the Stupid.

Tax the Stupid.Okay. Stay with me on this one. In America, we tax everything. There’s income tax, sales tax, inheritance tax, and on and on and on. That doesn’t even begin to cover all the hidden taxes – user fees, surcharges, and the like. I, for one, would dearly love to see the entire U.S. tax code scrapped, and either a flat tax (X% of income) or a VAT (value-added tax) to replace all of it. Since I don’t think I’ll see that in my lifetime, I have a modest proposal for an alternative that would generate all the income the government needs, and then some. It’s simple, effective, and likely to be welcomed with open arms by a vast majority of the public.

Media Bias.

Think the only bias you see on TV is in the network news departments? Think again. Last night, Law & Order featured a script whereby the Minutemen were depicted as ultra-right-wing fanatics who find it acceptable to murder to prove their point.

Give me a break.

Let’s see…the Minutemen are a bunch of unarmed volunteers trying to illuminate the wholesale invasion of our country by illegals (sorry…”undocumented workers”) whose ranks include terrorists, drug runners, murderers, and others who would do our country harm. I live in the Texas Panhandle. There are more Hispanics in this area than there are Blacks or other minorities. Think they want the borders open? Nope. They are all for enforcing immigration laws. Avoiding the Obvious.

3000 lb. gorilla
What happens when your worldview clashes with reality? For most people, it seems they will go to almost any length to ignore the obvious.

Case in point, Sony. They maintain that there’s nothing wrong with their DRM software – people just misunderstand it. Uh huh. As if we all fail to grasp that Sony is using their goal to prevent (mis)use of their copyrighted IP and just happen to endanger every computer by installing a back door for hackers. They think they are justified in doing whatever it takes to protect their property – even putting customer’s property (their PCs) at risk. When confronted by the folly of their actions, they first ignore, then spin it, then back down but refuse to acknowledge the obvious – they were wrong. [Read more…] about Avoiding the Obvious.

The News has gotten to be SUCH a tease…

Most men lead lives of quiet desperation. Details at 11. – Reuven Frank

Evening News

Here’s something interesting to try, the next time you watch the local evening news. Get a stopwatch and time the newscast. Write down the number of minutes taken up by commercials, the actual news stories, and the time they spend teasing the news/weather/sports. I think you’ll be amazed at how little time is spent on the subject matter, and how much time they waste on teasing the next story. [Read more…] about The News has gotten to be SUCH a tease…

Paris is Burning.

france
I’m curious…has anybody made the connection yet between the news coming out of France, and Ayn Rand’s masterwork, Atlas Shrugged? While I am always saddened to hear about riots, loss of life, and attacks on police and rescue workers, I’ve got to admit, I’m not surprised. This has been a long time coming, and I hear the sounds of chickens coming home to roost. Allow me to explain… [Read more…] about Paris is Burning.
