O.J. (Karmically speaking.)

Karma. What goes around comes around. Fate. Call it what you will, it looks as if Orinthal Julius Simpson has finally gotten what he deserves. I’m not sure if the time he’ll serve is more severe because of his infamy over beating the rap for murdering his wife and a waiter. It could be that he’ll serve less time, because he’s famous. In this case, I doubt it, because he already used his “Get out of Jail FREE” card he was issued due to his fame. Nope, I think he’s getting what he’s gotten, at least partially because he got off scott-free before. Not just that – he got off, and then spent the intervening years searching for his wife’s “real” killer on the nation’s finest golf courses.

Give me a break.

O.J.’s going down because he was taught throughout his entire career that the rules don’t apply to him. What a surprise it must have been to learn that they do.

At the sentencing hearing today, O.J. apparently believed that a bunch of crocodile tears could overcome the recordings that were made of his “sting” operation, where he referenced the “Golddiggers” (read: Goldman family) and proclaimed that he didn’t want them to get his “stuff.” In fact, the entire caper was caught on tape, and the contrast between what was recorded and O.J.’s tearful apology was stark.  The idea that he’s getting railroaded here because of the previous double-murder is wrong. O.J. is as guilty of this crime as he was of the murders. The difference is that here, he’s not getting off because of his celebrity. However, I do believe that he’s lost any sympathy that a real first-time offender might have goten specifically because of his behavior after the trial and his infamy/celebrity status. The judge stated that she’s not passing sentence based on his previous behavior. I believe her. I do believe, however, that the jury took the murder case into account. They almost had to. It’s simply too big a deal.

It’s impossible to know how long Simpson will actually serve. According to Fox News, he will serve a minimum of 6 years, and may serve as long as 16 years. A lot of people don’t do well in prison. Even with the shorter sentence, this may end up being a life sentence for O.J. At any rate, he’s going to spend a good bit of what’s left of his life behind bars.

Guilty of arrogance and stupidity in the first degree.

UPDATE: Fox News is now reporting that O.J.'s minimum sentence will be NINE years, with a possibility he'll be in for as long as 33 years (which, as he's 61 years old, whatever time he spends behind bars is likely to be a life sentence).
