If you’re anything like I am, you’re pretty steamed at the way Congress has acted throughout this financial crisis. Here’s a couple of salient facts you might NOT know:
- The sub-prime crisis is at the heart of the current financial crisis.
- The Clinton administration and the Democrat-controlled Congress were the ones that demanded that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loosen their qualifications requirements so that low-income people could qualify for a home loan.
- When the Republicans took over Congress, they did nothing to fix this problem.
- John McCain and (independently) the Bush Administration both warned (over 5 years ago) that Frannie Mae and Freddie Mac were both out of control, and needed reining in. The Democrats (led by Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, et all) wouldn’t hear of it.
- Barney Frank’s significant other was a high-ranking official at Fannie Mae for years. Frank is the House Chair of the Banking Committee. They both insisted that there was no conflict of interest between the two, even though the House has oversight with Fannie Mae.
- The second bail-out bill mushroomed from a few pages to over 450. Few substantive changes to the first bill were made. The extra pages were due to the additions of an enormous amount of Congressional pork – earmarks, et cetera.
- Virtually all the pork in the Senate bill was added was to woo not Senators, but Representatives. The Senate approved it easily. It was the House that needed convincing. The Senate bill was brought to the House as a “take it or leave it” bill, with no opportunity for making any changes, whatsoever.
- The phone lines in both the House and Senate were so overloaded, it virtually shut down the D.C. phone system. The House and Senate email servers were also stretched to capacity.
- Calls and emails ran about 80% against the bill.
Okay, campers. Here’s my view. We have a problem here. Congress – both houses – absolutely refuse to do what we are paying them to do…unless they can find a way to pork up the bills. They simply will not listen to the will of We the People. Instead, they pander to lobbyists and special interest groups. They also do a lousy job of taking ANY responsibility for anything they’ve done. That goes for BOTH parties. So…why not throw the bums out?
According to the U.S. Constitution, we elect every member of the U.S. House every two years. We only elect one-third of the Senate in any election year, and they serve for six-year terms. It will therefore take a minimum of six years to replace every Senator. We the People have the power to clean (the) House in one month. Let’s, shall we?
Here’s what I propose: Vote against EVERY incumbent in the House or the Senate. Period.
Keep in mind, I’m a conservative, and both my Representative (Mac Thornberry) and Senator (John Cornyn) are Republicans – and ostensibly Conservatives. I am willing to vote for a Democrat – even a LIBERAL Democrat, just in order to throw the rascals out. I am advocating a complete changing of the guard within the U.S. House, EVEN if that means that the House becomes even more Democrat-controlled than it is now. I’m willing to take that risk, because I believe – firmly – that it is better to have an entirely new bunch of clowns running that particular show, than it is to send ANY of the current bunch of clowns back to D.C. If we were able to get, say, 75% new faces up there, it would take the majority of members at least a couple of years to get in bed with the lobbyists, learn how to pander, and become beholden to special interests. Think of the advantages. We could actually have one chamber that was able to get something done without being slavishly devoted to the status quo. We could have a group that would cooperate with each other, instead of constantly bickering – polarization could be gone overnight. And we could have a body that actually answers to We the People.
Join with me. Just say “NO” to incumbency. Vote for whomever you like in the Presidential election. You can argue that either candidate will represent “change.” I’m voting for McCain/Palin, because I believe McCain to be a good, honorable man, and I think Palin is great. I do not trust Obama and his socialist policies are uniformly bad ideas for the country. Biden is a hack. But I’m willing to cross party lines and vote Democrat for my Senator and Representative, because I want to send one crystal clear message to Congress this year, and that message is:
“YOU’RE FIRED.”
Please join me. The future of our country, and the efficiency of Congress is at stake.
