Just came back from watching An American Carol, and I’m very happy to report that I found it pretty funny, very entertaining, occasionally poignant, and incredibly refreshing. It’s not often that, as a conservative, I can go to see a film and not wince at the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) liberal agenda that the studio and director choose to serve up. Way to many Hollywood films are made by Liberals, for Liberals – or even worse, made by a bunch of Hollywood types who use their films to stake their claim to “I can be more liberal than you can.”
This film is different. Waaaaaaaaaaaaay different. For one thing, it manages to skewer the left and get some laughs. Even better it mercilessly mocks Islamic terrorists, and doesn’t bother to pretend that they are anything but what they are – idiots. Even better, the film is populated by a bunch of first-rate, first-tier actors – Kelsey Grammer, Jon Voight, and company – who are either conservatives or are willing to make fun of their own side. Refreshing. Most liberals I know are perfectly willing to skewer the right, but get awfully sensitive when it comes to poking fun at themselves.
Kevin Farley (brother of the late Chris Farley) is spot-on perfect as “Michael Malone” (read: Michael Moore). Grammer gives a compelling performance as General George S. Paton, and Voight is absolutely moving as General George Washington. If you don’t choke up a little when Washington reveals the reason for the dust on his chair in St. Paul’s, then you’re not an American.
Bottom line, this is a funny movie. If you’re a conservative, you’ll love it. If you’re a liberal, you may enjoy it, but you’re liable to feel a little uncomfortable from time to time. If you’re a leftwing wingnut or an Islamo-fascist apologist, you’re going to need some duct tape for your head, as well as some Valium.
We saw it on the opening weekend, since Hollywood will do everything they can to bury this film. If you haven’t seen it already, it’s not too late – the bigger the take, the harder it will be for Hollywood to ignore. Support this one, and perhaps we might get some more flicks that balance out the typically one-sided crap we get out of La La Land.
